Review: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler

I love Anne Tyler. After The Road debacle, I needed something a little lighter. Not that Anne Tyler is what you'd call "light". The families she portrays are so realistic, but also always a little bit depressing, too. This book is no exception. Many places where I've read biographies of Anne Tyler's writing, people have said that Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is her best work. I really, really loved it. Sorry I don't have much to say about it right now, but if you like Anne Tyler, and you haven't read this one, read it. If you haven't read Anne Tyler, start here.

Hey Lisa!

Thanks for checking in on the Chunkster Challenge and congrats on finishing. The Book Thief is fabulous, isn't it?

wow...that's quite a recommendation. And I always rely on yours! So I'll have to give it a go. I haven't read all of her stuff but what I have read, I've enjoyed. So I figure I'll like this one (and I'll definitely pass on the book you mentioned in your prior post. Thanks but no thanks!! Yikes!)

I have only heard good things about this one. When I give her another chance (didn't like the one I read) I think I will be picking up this one.

I haven't read Tyler yet, but I do own a copy of this one, so I'll take your advice and start with it. Although, her novel 'Digging to America' is on the NYT and I'm desperately behind on that challenge...ugh. TMBNET. (too many books, not enough time)

I really, really liked this one, too. One of my favorites of hers. I had a stinky workshop leader who faulted Tyler's use of different Points of View, but poo on that! This and Accidental Tourist remain my 2 Top Tylers.

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant is Anne Tyler's own favorite of her novels.
